The Ottawa Ferret Association is a small group of volunteer ferret owners who, several years ago, realized there was a need for a ferret rescue operation. Until that time, unwanted ferrets left at the Humane Society were sadly, euthanized. Not many people were interested in adopting ferrets and for the most part the general public knew very little about ferrets.

In May 1990 the first ferret was rescued from the Humane Society of Ottawa-Carleton. We are fortunate indeed to have a Humane Society with whom we have an excellent rapport. All ferrets who enter their doors are immediately placed in our care. As well, inquiries from prospective owners interested in adopting a ferret are referred to the OFA. All rescued ferrets are taken to our veterinarian for a check-up and vaccinations and if necessary are neutered/spayed and descented. Many require life-saving surgeries and receive the proper medical care. Our policy is NO KILL. The very old are cared for permanently in our homes. Ferrets received in pairs must go to new homes in pairs.

Funds to care for orphaned ferrets are raised through garage sales, raffles, adoption fees, ferretsitting and our 'not to be missed' annual "Ferret Frolic". This popular event is held the last Sunday in May at Andrew Haydon Park, Nepean, Ontario. It features judging for the biggest/smallest ferrets, longest tail, pinkest nose, biggest ears, etc. as well as tube races and a costume contest. Our only other source of income is the generous donations we receive from ferret lovers who believe in what the OFA stands for. To those people we are grateful.

Ferrets are not a suitable pet for everyone. Prospective owners must be convinced not to buy a ferret on impulse. There are many things to consider beyond the initial cost before making a final commitment such as medical care, housing, ferret-proofing, available time, etc.

Once a ferret comes into our care, it becomes a member of our own family. It is hard to part with them and sometimes impossible. Prospective owners must be able to provide a safe environment for their adoptees and be prepared to provide proper food and lots of love and as well as the best medical care. They must also be willing to return the ferret to the OFA if they decide that living with a ferret is not what they wanted or expected.

An adoption fee is charged for each ferret according to its age (from $50.00 to $125.00) with special fees for pairs since we want them to stay together. The fee includes a vaccination against canine distemper; a rabies vaccination is left up to the new parents.

We hope that you enjoy reading the following information and take all aspects of ferret ownership into account before making the decision to add a ferret to your family.
